I fail to understand the mindset of the Republican Party and its candidates for the presidency. They are attacking each other with a fervor that should, at best, be reserved for the general election. Is it their intent to have a Republican as president next year or is it that they must win the primaries and become the candidate at all cost? I think that in their zeal to win they are accomplishing what the Democratic Party could not do on there own…..And that is giving the Democrats the ammunition they need to tear down the Republican candidate in the fall. They are dragging out everything that is even mildly negative about the opposition and distorting it to make the other look as badly as they can. I can just imagine the Democrats using the same ads against them in the fall. What is the matter with them? Don’t they want to win? Is their mindset,”it’s got to be me or no one else”?

It may be too late to save the candidates from their own punishing rivalry to defeat Obama in the fall and that is simply too bad. Four more years of the policies of this president will take a very longer time to recover from.

We just left Iraq, we are preparing to leave Afghanistan by 2014, the question is, why are we still in Germany?World War II was over in the 1940′s, the cold war was effectively over 20 years ago but we still have thousands of our military in Germany. Why? The Germans are quite financially capable of supporting their own armed forces and the threat from the Soviet Union has diminished to almost nothing since the Soviet Union no longer exists and I am sure Russia has no intent on invading Europe again, so why are we still in Germany?

Isn;t it time we reduce our force there to zero, keep our soldiers home and save the millions of dollars a year that we spend to keep them there? I am sure that the average German citizen isn’t too keen on having an “occupying force” and foreign military bases on their soil, just as we wouldn’t want a foreign army based in the United States. There is no longer a reason to have such a large strategic force based in Germany. I can understand having a base for support of troops being sent to other areas as the US is such a long way from other parts of the world but a fighting force stationed there? I think it is time to rethink our role in supporting Germany militarily.

Yesterday on the local news they had a spot about “fracking”, the process of injecting water and chemicals into shale to remove natural gas. If it is allowed here it will mean lower energy costs and thousands of new jobs in North Carolina but some are opposed due to environmental grounds.

They interviewed a lady that was opposed and demonstrating against fracking. She said that the companies wanting to extract natural gas had only a motive for profit and not a motive for keeping our earth environmentally sound. Fine, but I noticed that she was a very well dressed lady, and I thought how hypocritical of her. Everything that she wore was manufactured with a motive for profit. She paid for that with her own or her husband’s motive for profit. What she drove to the demonstration in was manufactured with a motive of profit. She went back to a home that was built with a motive for profit. Since when has profit become a dirty word?

Look at all the nations in the world. Observe them closely. Where you see pain, suffering, starvation and a destitute populace look then at their government. In all cases you will find a corrupt government that is intent on holding onto power at the expense of the people. Great civilizations became great by allowing their people the freedom to prosper. Even in the case of ancient Kings and leaders that held absolute power over their subjects, prosperity for the people became property for them. But, when those leaders became tyrants and began taking more and more from their subjects those civilizations fell.

There is no government that exists today, or in the past, or in the future that can guarantee that all people will be taken care of and equality for all will be the norm. It cannot exists. As George Orwell said in Animal Farm, “All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.” People in power start to assume that they are “more equal than others”.

We can only strive to have a nation that offers equal opportunity to all, but not all are equal to the opportunity. As Jesus said, “The poor you shall always have with you.” Differing classes of rich and poor will always exist even in a just society simply because some are more able than others. Although we can try to provide a safety net for the poor we should not punish the able simply because they are more capable than others. But let us not remove the incentive to achieve by providing too much to able bodied people. I believe that workfare instead of welfare should be instituted. If you receive than you must give according to the abilities that you have. Give the unable a living wage, yes, but from them we should also receive according to what they can do. In other words give to them a job for the price of receiving assistance. You don’t work, you don’t get paid. If you are on unemployment benefits you must work for them. Require that 3 days of the week you must report for work and a job will be assigned to you. However menial it may be at least we will be receiving value for the money we are giving them weekly.

I predict that the so-called “Arab Spring” that the main stream media loves to call the uprising in the Arab countries will be nothing more than Islamic Fundamentalism taking over the political processes in those nations. There will be no democracy once the Islamists take over those countries. What you will see is strict sharia law with the clerics spewing hatred for western civilization. Freedoms will be curtailed and women’s rights will be non-existent. Time will tell if I am correct, but we are already seeing this in Tunisia and in Libya where the new leaders are calling for all laws to adhere to Islam and sharia or be declared null and void.

Ask Greece where one in three workers work for the government and is now an economic basket case.

President Obama is jetting around the country on the taxpayers dime promoting his American Jobs Act. But is he promoting the act or is he just campaigning and using the act as a pretense to avoid paying for the flights out of his campaign war chest?

He wants Congress to pass his $450 billion plan to create jobs and stimulate the economy. After spending a trillion dollars in an attempt to stimulate the economy he thinks about a half trillion more will do it. Let’s investigate. Recently in a speech in North Carolina he claimed the act will fund 13,000 North Carolina teachers, police and firefighters but what he didn’t say is that his bill would fund the jobs for only one year. And, he didn’t say how the jobs would be paid for after that. A section of the bill would require the states to “meet the requirements” of the act for an additional two years. His act will provide $900 million for the first year of jobs, then the NC taxpayer would be on the hook for two additional years. North Carolina would be forced to raise almost 2 billion in taxes from local citizens to pay for his jobs plan.

These are unsustainable, public payroll jobs. It takes money out of the private sector to prop up public sector jobs. Jobs that by their very essence cost the taxpayer outrages sums due to the retirement benefits that public sector jobs give employees that private sector does not. Thereby creating a huge unfunded liability for government. It is time that government jobs offer the same benefits as private sector, such as 401-K’s instead of pensions for life.

There are ways to help the economy create jobs, but putting more people on the government payroll is not one of them. Greece did it for 40 years and is now a basket case economically. One in three workers in Greece are on the government payroll. The other two pay for the third to work, that is totally unsustainable and that country is suffering the consequences now. Can we afford to get into the same position? I think not.

I don’t usually have much to say about the movies. Especially since if Hollywood was expecting to make a living off of me, they would starve to death. I have gone to two movies in the last five years but when I heard about Atlas Shrugged I had to go.

First let me say that if you like bang-bang-shoot em up movies you will be very disappointed. If you like mind candy type of movies, the kind where you just go to be mindlessly entertained, again you will be disappointed. This is a thinking person’s movie, but then so was the book. Could it have been made a little better? Yes it could. Was the cinematography a bit lacking? Yes it was. The story line did hold fairly well with the book and even though there were a few glaring contradictions in the movie itself most people probably wouldn’t notice.

It is about time that Hollywood stopped casting successful people as mean, greedy, industrialists out to destroy the world for their own profits. The real world is not that way, regardless of what liberals would have you think. Most people want to have a successful business and be rewarded for their accomplishments and in doing so others ride on their coattails and are able to provide for their families.

I’m not going to get into the premise of the movie, you will just have to go see it for yourself. But I will say that I enjoyed it, wished it was longer and went into greater depth. It could have been made into an excellent made-for-tv movie that could have been on two hours a night for 5 nights. That would have been an excellent mini-series.

They would have been able to flesh out the characters more and showed just who are the villains in this world. Suffice to say that we don’t have free enterprise or capitalism in America today. What we have is crony-capitalism and I believe this movie depicts it well.

Mr. Obama is intent on helping the Libyan rebels defeat the current regime. The question that has not been answered is who are these people? Granted many are Libyan citizens and I am sure that there goals are to free themselves from a repressive regime, but what about their leaders? Rumors now abound that Al-Qaeda and Hezbollah are behind much of the uprising. Are we backing the wrong horse? Is it true as Gaddafi has claimed that we are being duped by Al-Qaeda and the result will be a fundamentalist Islamic State with Shariah Law that will turn on the United States and Europe? We shall see, but for now I remain a skeptic of this whole military intervention.

But as for Mr. Obama, he has in effect declared war on Libya without consulting with Congress and getting Congressional approval. Of course, the Constitution has never really mattered to him anyway.
